I lost my first Hardcore run in under 30 minutes. Broke a lockpick on my first door, panicked, used the crowbar, alerted a patrol, got chased, arrested, save gone. Not my finest moment.

Hardcore mode deletes your save on arrest. Quotas are higher (about 1.5x), police are more aggressive, and fence prices are approximately 20% lower. The core loop is the same but the margin for error is razor thin.

Preparation Before Your First Hardcore Run

Before my first Hardcore heist, I spent time in Standard mode until I could navigate every map from memory. I know which houses have electronic locks, where NPCs patrol, where police spawn, and where fence locations are. If you are going into Hardcore without full map knowledge, you are gambling.

Do not attempt Hardcore until you can reliably clear 5+ houses in Standard mode without triggering any alarms. Map knowledge is not optional in Hardcore -- it is survival. Every second spent searching for a hiding spot or exit route is a second the police can catch you.

Tool Management

Tools break faster in Hardcore from what I have seen. I carry 2x of essential tools (lockpick, flashlight), fix tools after every single heist without exception, and prioritize the Tool Maintenance skill leaflet above all others. Multiple Steam guides confirm the same priority.

The Tool Rule

  • Carry one tool, one backup in hideout
  • Repair after every heist
  • Never enter a house with a damaged primary tool
  • If your lockpick breaks inside a house, abort immediately

Quota Pacing

  • First run: lowest-risk house, even if it barely covers quota
  • Second run: medium houses with item requests
  • Third run onward: expand to higher-risk targets

Do not speed-run quotas. I tried that my first Hardcore death and it ended exactly as you would expect. Consistent small scores prevent death spirals.

Sample Quota Plan (First 3 Quotas)

QuotaTargetHouses to HitExpected LootStrategy
1$5002 small$600-$800Window entry only, 60 sec max per house
2$7503 small$900-$1,200Lockpick doors, grab electronics only
3$1,0002 medium$1,200-$1,800Full clear, item requests priority

If you are within $50-$100 of meeting a quota, sell whatever low-value items you have rather than risk another heist. One more run is the leading cause of Hardcore deaths. I have lost two runs this way -- both times I was already over-quota but wanted "just a little more" cash.

Police Evasion in Hardcore

Standard tactics work but with less margin. I hide longer after each alert (wait 2x the timer), never sprint in the open, and abandon a house at the first sight of police -- even if loot is left behind.

Evasion Protocol

  1. First sign of police: stop moving, crouch near a wall or behind furniture. Do not sprint to a hiding spot -- movement noise alerts cops.
  2. Heartbeat phase (police searching): move only when the search indicator starts dropping. Use closets, bathrooms, or under beds. Stay still until the indicator is fully gone.
  3. Clear phase: wait an extra 15 seconds after the indicator disappears. Police sometimes double back.

Pre-Planned Escape Routes

I have a pre-planned escape route from every house I enter. Before entering a new house for the first time, I spend 15 seconds identifying:

  • Two exit points (primary and backup)
  • A hiding spot (closet, bathroom, or dark corner)
  • The direction to the nearest fence or safe zone
  • Obstacles between me and the exit (fences, locked gates, patrol paths)

The Most Common Cause of Death

Overconfidence. You cleared three rooms cleanly, so you push for one more room. That is where the patrol rounds the corner. I force myself to leave early rather than stay late. Every time I ignore this rule, I regret it.

When to Abort

  • Lockpick breaks on the first door of a 4-door house
  • Police alert within 30 seconds of entry
  • Two or more NPCs in unexpected positions
  • Any sign of a security system you did not expect
  • Your flashlight dies (too many dark corners = missed loot = wasted run)
  • You accidentally trigger an alarm (one alarm cascades into police response)
When you abort, you live. When you push, you might lose everything. This is the single most important rule in Hardcore mode. I have aborted 20+ runs and every time I was glad I did. I have pushed through on 5 runs and lost 4 of them.

Hardcore-Specific Skill Leaflet Priority

In Standard mode, you can afford to experiment with leaflet order. In Hardcore, the order matters:

  1. Tool Maintenance -- reduces tool break rate, saving you from mid-heist disasters
  2. Stealth Movement -- quieter footsteps keep you undetected longer
  3. Advanced Lockpicking -- faster and quieter door opening
  4. Carry Capacity -- more loot per run, fewer runs total
  5. Hacking -- access to electronic-locked rooms with better loot

Resource Management

Your hideout stash is your safety net. I keep these items at all times:

  • 2 lockpick sets (one to carry, one backup)
  • 1 flashlight (carry)
  • 1 sleeping gas (emergency use only)
  • $1,000 minimum cash reserve

Never dip below the cash reserve. If a heist goes wrong and you lose your tools, that $1,000 buys replacements so you can keep playing instead of being soft-locked.
